Functional Skills English & Maths

What Are Functional Skills Qualifications?

Functional Skills are nationally recognised qualifications in English and Maths, offered at Level 1 and Level 2, that focus on the practical application of these subjects rather than the broader academic content of a GCSE.

Skills You Can Use

Functional Skills assess whether a learner can apply English and Maths confidently in everyday, workplace and study situations.

Two Levels of Study

Level 1 sits broadly around a lower GCSE grade, while Level 2 is recognised as broadly equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 (C).

Who Are Functional Skills For?

Adult Learners

A structured way back into English and Maths study for adults.

Apprentices

Many apprenticeship standards require evidence of Level 1 or 2 English and Maths.

GCSE Resit Alternative

A more applied style of learning for students who haven't achieved a grade 4.

Career Changers

A refresher qualification demonstrating current English and Maths competency.
